Professional Education
Professional Education is considered a critical activity at NJPIES. We offer many educational programs for licensed health care professions, residents in training and students. Our professional staff provides programs on site at the poison center, universities, and health care facilities throughout NJ.
NJPIES is a major teaching site for pharmacy students/residents, nursing students and medical students/residents. Those completing their toxicology (drug/poison information) rotation at the center become “part of us” and learn about the management of patients exposed to medications, chemicals and environmental toxins. During the rotation, these health professionals learn how to provide evidence based responses to specific medical inquiries that arise.
In conjunction with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s (UMDNJ) School of Nursing and the UMDNJ Center for Continuing and Outreach Education, NJPIES offers a FREE continuing education program for physicians, pharmacists and nurses. While spending a day at NJPIES these health professionals learn about our activities and poison management.
For more information on these programs, please contact Bruce Ruck, PharmD. at Bruck@njpies.org.

New Jersey Medical School Lecture Series
NJPIES is, administratively, a division of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health of the New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). Each year we are responsible for providing a set of lectures to the second year medical school class on clinical toxicology. The cases are presented as “unknowns” and the students and faculty together work through the approach to diagnosis and treatment. The slides used during each lecture series are reproduced and posted on our website each year.
