Poison Prevention Week
About PPW
Each year, Poison Control Centers (PCC) nationwide gear up to celebrate the observance of National Poison Prevention Week, the third week in March. During this time, PCCs and their community partners intensify their efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of unintentional poisonings, educate on how to prevent unintentional poisonings from occurring, and increase awareness of the Poison Control Centers’ services in an attempt to prevent or treat a poisoning. Poison Control Centers should be recognized for their part in helping to eliminating thousands of unnecessary and expensive emergency room visits to local hospitals by offering callers free and confidential emergency poison consultation via their Poison Help Hotline 1-800-222-1222. Approximately ninety percent (90%) of poisonings happen in the home nationwide and many of these incidences can be managed over the phone without ever having to step foot in an emergency room.
The observance of National Poison Prevention Week provides a perfect opportunity for Poison Control Centers to help build safer communities one home at a time (throughout their individual states) by stressing unintentional poisonings can happen to anyone at any time including adults, older adults, children, and pets. Although PCCs encourage their communities to learn ways to prevent poisonings, they also stress the importance of being prepared in the event of a poisoning – know where to call for help 1-800-222-1222.
Each year, NJPIES promotes National Poison Prevention Week statewide by disseminating postcards inviting hospitals, pharmacies, public and private schools, public libraries, health departments, emergency medical service agencies, county offices on aging, community-based organizations, American Red Cross, pediatricians, members of the state legislature, fire departments, police departments, childcare directors, Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers, businesses, etc. to celebrate National Poison Prevention Week by ordering free educational materials to distribute to their patrons. Over 600,000 pieces of poison prevention educational materials are distributed each year as part of its Poison Prevention Week outreach. In conjunction with distributing information, NJPIES educators diligently cover the state educating the public on the dangers of poisoning, how to prevent poisonings, poison center services, and where to call for help in the event of an emergency or for a poison-related question.
