Poison Prevention Week

About PPW

Each year, the third week of March is designated as National Poison Prevention Week. During this time Poison Control Centers and their community partners intensify their efforts to spread the vital message of poison safety across the nation. In observance of National Poison Prevention Week, NJPIES annually holds a statewide, 4th grade Poison Prevention Poster Contest to educate students about poison safety. Each winner receives a U.S. Savings Bond and is recognized for his/her outstanding efforts at an annual Poison Prevention Week Awards Ceremony and Brunch. Joining NJPIES in this celebration are members of the State Legislature, public officials, corporate and non-profit partners, health care professionals, mascots from New Jersey’s sports teams, parents, teachers, and friends. Apart from the poster contest, NJPIES provides various schools, health care facilities, community based organizations, and pharmacies with educational materials to distribute to their patrons. In 2006, over 800,000 pieces of educational materials were distributed throughout NJ as part of Poison Prevention Week outreach alone!
